SHARKS' TEETH
Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.

Explanation:

rising action and reflection, I think

Rising action is the set up to the story where there hasn’t been a big turning point yet but they’re setting up, telling you about the lead up. Reflection would be similar to a flashback where they look back on something that happened in the past.

Lucas is given the paragraph below to read and paraphrase.

Achilles, a powerful Greek warrior, was thought to be immortal because he had been submerged in the River Styx during infancy. However, because his mother dipped him into the water while holding his heel, he was left vulnerable in that small spot. Today “Achilles’ heel” refers to a weakness that can lead to downfall.

Which is the best paraphrase of the paragraph?

A - Because he was dipped in the River Styx, Achilles was thought to be immortal. Unfortunately his mother held him by the heel, and he was weak in that area. An “Achilles’ heel” is a weakness that can lead to downfall.
B - “Achilles’ heel” is a term used to describe a weak spot. The phrase comes from the story of a Greek soldier who was thought to be unbeatable—but was actually vulnerable.
C - Today the phrase “Achilles’ heel” refers to a weakness that can lead to downfall. This refers to the story of a powerful Greek warrior who had been submerged in the River Styx during childhood.
D - The article says, “Achilles, a powerful Greek warrior, was thought to be immortal because he had been submerged in the River Styx during infancy.” It explains the meaning of “Achilles’ heel.”

Please Help!!! In Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery," how does the contrast between the characters’ view of the lottery and that of readers' impact the story?

- Tessie's obviously negative view of the lottery after she wins conflicts with the readers' previous view of the lottery as rather mundane to create suspense about why Tessie gets so upset.

- The way the women of the village celebrate and take pride in the lottery goes against the readers' view of it as a shameful event and gives the text its wacky tone.

- The way the children of the town innocently approve of the lottery makes the readers' view of the lottery as foolish seem misguided and gives the story its conflict.

- The Hutchinsons' positive view of the lottery throughout the story differs from the readers' view of the lottery as suspicious from the very start to create humor as the story progresses.

The quotation that best provides a reason why teenagers struggle to get enough sleep is despite the change in their internal body clocks, school start times and other schedules don’t change.” (Paragraph 11). Option C is the correct answer.

This quotation highlights a significant factor contributing to teenagers' struggle to get enough sleep. It emphasizes that although teenagers experience changes in their internal body clocks during adolescence, school start times and other schedules remain the same. Option C is the correct answer.

This misalignment between their natural sleep patterns and early school start times can make it difficult for teenagers to obtain sufficient sleep. The quotation suggests that external factors, such as school schedules, play a role in teenagers' sleep deprivation. During adolescence, teenagers experience a shift in their internal body clocks, also known as circadian rhythms. Read Robert Frost's poem, "The Birthplace." Then, identify and describe the main kind of figurative language that's used in the poem. Finally, discuss how this use of figurative language contributes to the poem's meaning.

Here further up the mountain slope

Than there was ever any hope,

My father built, enclosed a spring,

Strung chains of wall round everything,

Subdued the growth of earth to grass

And brought our various lives to pass.

A dozen girls and boys we were.

The mountain seemed to like the stir,

And made of us a little while–

With always something in her smile.

Today she wouldn't know our name.

(No girl's, of course, has stayed the same.)

The mountain pushed us off her knees.

And now her lap is full of trees.

Explanation:

The main kind of figurative language used in the poem "The Birthplace" is personification.

The contribution of the use of personification in the poem serves to emphasize the author's nostalgic feeling about nature.

Frost uses personification in trying to show the transient relationship between man and nature, how nature is so changed and man so out of touch with it that she wouldn't even remember their name.

essay on what a life is to you

Answers

Answer:

What life is to me?

Explanation:

It’s one thing to be alive, but it’s another to actually be living. As humans, we have the choice to go through the motions, watching the days go by, or we can really embrace the life around us. It’s easier than you think to fall into the routine of the first option.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve lived a majority of my life that way. However recently I’ve been making a conscious effort to wake up each morning with a new goal: to actually live my life. I want to experience it all. I want to experience happiness from everything around me, big and small. However, with this mindset, I have to expect to have my share of misfortune-- that is part of living. Something I’ve come to realize is that I cannot have the mindset that life is only full of happy things. The reality is, it isn’t. But this doesn’t mean I can’t live a happy life. It’s completely possible to live a happy life while dealing with problems. That’s one huge lesson I’ve learned.

Life is the little things. There are so many things that we all experience. We all turn 18, we all go to college, we all get married, etc. These are big things. They don’t differentiate us, though. Some people, including myself once, mistakenly defined life by milestones. Granted, these milestones are very important. But what often gets forgotten are those little things. The things that make us who we are, the things that make those milestones all the more special.
