The Revenue Act or Wilson-Gorman Tariff of 1894

Answers

The Wilson-Gorman Tariff of 1894, often known as the Revenue Act, placed a 2% tax on income above $4,000 and marginally reduced United States tariff rates from those determined by the 1890 McKinley Tariff.

It bears the names of two Democrats, Senator Arthur P. Gorman of Maryland and Representative William L. Wilson of West Virginia, who serves as chair of the House Ways and Means Committee. This attempt at tariff reform, which was backed by Democratic Party members who support free trade, imposed the first income tax in peacetime (2% on income over $4,000, or $88,100 in 2010 USD, meaning less than 1% of households would pay any). To replace the revenue that would be lost due to tariff reductions, the income tax was implemented.

While Grover Cleveland was still in power, the Democrats wanted to move away from the protectionism that the McKinley tariff proposed. By coincidence, the exemption for married couples would be $4,000 when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Revenue Act of 1913 into law as a result of the 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution being ratified in February 1913.

The ways how the war transform life on the home front

Firstly, industries adapted to focus on wartime production, leading to increased manufacturing of weapons, vehicles, and other military equipment. This shift created jobs and boosted the economy, while also causing shortages of consumer goods.

Secondly, rationing was implemented to ensure equitable distribution of essential items such as food, clothing, and fuel. People were required to use ration coupons, which led to more mindful consumption habits and the popularization of community gardens and recycling efforts.

Lastly, the war brought about a change in gender roles, as many men left for combat, creating a demand for women to fill jobs in the workforce. What rules would you have for the South before it would be allowed to return to the Union? Would you be strict?

President Abraham Lincoln formulated an outline for Reconstruction two years before the war ended. He called this plan the Ten Percent Plan. It stated that for a state to be readmitted to the Union, ten percent of its voters had to take an oath of loyalty to the United States and the state had to abolish slavery.

Many Republicans did not support Lincoln’s plan because of its leniency, and they proposed an alternate plan that called for more demanding stipulations. Lincoln and Congress eventually agreed upon one proposal: the Freedmen’s Bureau, a government agency to help former slaves. The Bureau provided food, clothing, and employment assistance to blacks; set up schools; and provided medical assistance to more than one million people. This set the foundation for the public school system in the South and created colleges like Howard and Morehouse for African Americans. In addition to helping African Americans, this agency also helped poor whites.

At the end of the war, two differing views emerged concerning the policy of Reconstruction. Moderates wanted to end the resentment between the two sides and avoid unkind treatment toward the South. This group supported Lincoln’s plan. The opposing group, the radicals, wanted the South to be punished and ensure that blacks were being treated better than they had been before the war.

Before these groups reached a compromise, however, John Wilkes Booth assassinated Abraham Lincoln. It was just two weeks after the end of the Civil War. Lincoln’s vice-president, Andrew Johnson, rose to the presidency. Although Johnson attempted to continue Lincoln’s policy, he was unable to overcome the radicals, who controlled Congress and passed their own Reconstruction policy. The radicals almost removed Johnson from office, but the Senate voted against removing him by only one vote.

In order to protect Republican leaders who took over local Southern governments, the federal government placed Northern troops in the South. Many Southerners resented this new political system and remained devoutly loyal to their old traditions. Some of them joined the Ku Klux Klan, a secret society that used violence to keep blacks from trying to achieve equality.

During this period in the South, the state governments passed black codes that limited the rights of freedmen, essentially denying them all but second-class civil rights. Restrictions varied from state to state. These codes prevented blacks from gaining political and economic power; they could not vote, own guns, or serve on a jury. Some states forced them to sign one-year contracts to work, without which they could be arrested and sent to a plantation. Other states only allowed them to work as servants or as laborers on farms.

Concurrent with these black codes, the government passed three amendments to the Constitution meant to further the rights of blacks in America, including the Thirteenth Amendment (mentioned above), the Fourteenth Amendment, and the Fifteenth Amendment. The Fourteenth Amendment confirmed the citizenship of blacks, and the Fifteenth Amendment made it illegal to deny a person’s right to vote on the basis of race.

In the end, each Southern state was only readmitted to the Union when it agreed to follow all federal laws. Between 1866 and 1870, every Confederate state returned to the Union, although Reconstruction did not end until 1877 when federal troops left the South.

Even though Reconstruction attained some success, discrimination still existed and many Southerners reverted to the old social order based on white supremacy. Although blacks received more rights, including the right to attend public school systems, many historians wonder if Reconstruction would have been different if Abraham Lincoln had lived.

Answers

Based on the information presented in the journal entry, it seems that the author is discussing the issue of Reconstruction and the policies implemented to readmit Southern states to the Union after the Civil War. The author discusses the different views that emerged at the end of the war, with moderates favoring a more lenient approach, and radicals advocating for stricter punishment for the South.

The author also highlights the discriminatory laws and practices that existed during Reconstruction, such as the black codes that limited the rights of freedmen and the violence perpetrated by groups like the Ku Klux Klan. Despite some progress, discrimination persisted, and historians have questioned whether Reconstruction would have been more successful had Abraham Lincoln lived.

In terms of rules for the South to be readmitted to the Union, the author does not express a clear position. However, the journal entry provides information about the policies that were implemented, such as Lincoln's Ten Percent Plan and the Freedmen's Bureau, as well as the constitutional amendments that were passed to further the rights of blacks.

Intellectual and social changes occurred as a result of the Scientific Revolution are new empirical method of inductive reasoning based on observations and experiments and analysis rather than speculation (Bacon). Rise of a new social group-the international scientific community. Governments and scientific community begin to form alliance. Scientist question authority and tradition

During the early modern era, a succession of discoveries in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology (especially human anatomy), and chemistry altered how society perceived nature. These developments are collectively known as the Scientific Revolution. The De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres) by Nicolaus Copernicus, published in 1543, is frequently recognised as marking the commencement of the Scientific Revolution in Europe, which began during the latter half of the Renaissance period.

With Isaac Newton's 1687 publication of Principia, which established the laws of motion and universal gravitation and thus completed the synthesis of a new cosmology, the Scientific Renaissance was characterised by a focus on recovering some of the knowledge of the ancients. The idea of a scientific revolution first appeared during the Age of Enlightenment, in the writings of Jean Sylvain Bailly, who described it as a two-stage process of eradicating the outdated and establishing the modern. The limits of the Scientific Revolution and its timeline continue to be a topic of scholarly discussion.

Discuss the business and technological innovations that contributed to the industrial revolution taking place in the late 1800s.

Answers

The industrial revolution that took place in the late 1800s was a period of rapid technological advancement and innovation, which led to significant changes in the way goods were produced and consumed.

There were several key business and technological innovations that contributed to the industrial revolution, including:

Steam Power: The invention of the steam engine by James Watt in the late 1700s revolutionized transportation and manufacturing. Steam-powered machines could be used to drive factories, locomotives, and steamships, greatly increasing the speed and efficiency of production.

Mass Production: Henry Ford's assembly line technique, first introduced in the early 1900s, allowed for the mass production of standardized goods, such as automobiles. This led to a decrease in production costs and an increase in output, making goods more affordable for the average consumer.

Electrical Power: The invention of the electric motor by Nikola Tesla in the late 1800s provided a more efficient and flexible source of power than steam engines. It allowed for the development of new machines, such as electric sewing machines and typewriters, that further increased productivity.

Railroads: The expansion of railroads in the late 1800s allowed for faster transportation of goods and people, leading to the growth of new markets and industries.

Communication Technology: The development of the telegraph and telephone allowed for faster communication and increased connectivity between businesses and consumers, facilitating the growth of national and international markets.

These technological innovations were often driven by the business interests of entrepreneurs and investors, who saw the potential for profit in the new industries they created.

They also led to significant changes in social and economic structures, as traditional modes of production and labor were replaced by mechanization and automation.

Despite the challenges and inequalities that arose from these changes, the industrial revolution laid the groundwork for the modern global economy and transformed the way people live and work.
