Frankenstein Chapter 2, Excerpt
By Mary Shelley

Victor Frankenstein recounts the influences that lead to his great experiment:

When I was thirteen years of age we all went on a party of pleasure to the baths near Thonon; the inclemency of the weather obliged us to remain a day confined to the inn. In this house I chanced to find a volume of the works of Cornelius Agrippa. I opened it with apathy; the theory which he attempts to demonstrate and the wonderful facts which he relates soon changed this feeling into enthusiasm. A new light seemed to dawn upon my mind, and bounding with joy, I communicated my discovery to my father. My father looked carelessly at the title page of my book and said, "Ah! Cornelius Agrippa! My dear Victor, do not waste your time upon this; it is sad trash."

If, instead of this remark, my father had taken the pains to explain to me that the principles of Agrippa had been entirely exploded and that a modern system of science had been introduced which possessed much greater powers than the ancient, because the powers of the latter were chimerical, while those of the former were real and practical, under such circumstances I should certainly have thrown Agrippa aside and have contented my imagination, warmed as it was, by returning with greater ardour to my former studies. It is even possible that the train of my ideas would never have received the fatal impulse that led to my ruin. But the cursory glance my father had taken of my volume by no means assured me that he was acquainted with its contents, and I continued to read with the greatest avidity. When I returned home my first care was to procure the whole works of this author, and afterwards of Paracelsus and Albertus Magnus. I read and studied the wild fancies of these writers with delight; they appeared to me treasures known to few besides myself. I have described myself as always having been imbued with a fervent longing to penetrate the secrets of nature. In spite of the intense labour and wonderful discoveries of modern philosophers, I always came from my studies discontented and unsatisfied. Sir Isaac Newton is said to have avowed that he felt like a child picking up shells beside the great and unexplored ocean of truth. Those of his successors in each branch of natural philosophy with whom I was acquainted appeared even to my boy's apprehensions as tyros engaged in the same pursuit.

Under the guidance of my new preceptors I entered with the greatest diligence into the search of the philosopher's stone and the elixir of life; but the latter soon obtained my undivided attention. Wealth was an inferior object, but what glory would attend the discovery if I could banish disease from the human frame and render man invulnerable to any but a violent death!

What is Frankenstein?

English novelist Mary Shelley published her novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus in 1818. In the novel Frankenstein, a young scientist, Victor Frankenstein produces a sentient being through an unconventional scientific experiment.

Shelley visited Europe in 1815, traveling along the Rhine in Germany and arriving in Gernsheim, 17 miles (11 kilometers) from Frankenstein Castle, the site of an alchemist's experiments two centuries before.

Most of the novel is set in the Geneva region of Switzerland, so she next traveled there. Her companions, especially her admirer and future husband Percy B. Shelley, engaged in conversation about galvanism and esoteric concepts. Mary, Percy, and Lord Byron competed in 1816 to discover who could write the scariest tale.

What is the major source of conflict in "The Patient Cat"?

The major conflict in "The Patient Cat" can be regarded as Character vs. Nature. In the story, we learn about Hen the Cat who was not content with the things that he had. When seeking food from nature, he was first fortunate to find two beautiful and smooth eggs.

Instead of the cat being happy with these and being content with what he had, he continued to long for better meals that he would consume. This can be described as a conflict between the character, which is the cat, and nature because he sought more from nature and was not satisfied with what it already had. The lesson from this story is that we should always be content with what we have.

What is risk?

Risk is the potential for bad things to happen, to put it simply. Risk refers to uncertainty on how a certain action will affect or have implications for a human value (such as one's health, well-being, wealth, property, or the environment), frequently focused on unfavourable outcomes. There are numerous definitions that have been put forth. "Effect of uncertainty on objectives" is the globally accepted definition of risk for use in a variety of contexts. There are differences between different practise areas' understandings of risk, methods of assessment and management, descriptions of risk, and even definitions of risk (business, economics, environment, finance, information technology, health, insurance, safety, security etc).

I can see why they would want to protect their children from these risks. However, I also think that it is important for children to have the opportunity to participate in sports if they want to. Read the paragraph.

I have been a nurse for twenty years. In that time, I have seen a great number of patients suffer because they did not have health insurance. One of the worst cases was a young mother of two who was diagnosed with early stage skin cancer. Because she could not afford treatment, the cancer spread from her skin to other parts of her body. By the time I saw her for the first time, the cancer had reached her brain, and she could no longer be helped. This sort of thing should not happen to anyone. A strong universal health care system could prevent instances like this from occurring.

Answers

The addition that would make the paragraph more objective and effective is, the use of more subjective words like “worst” and “best”.

because All subjective can be interpreted in different ways. This term is connected to the sentence's subject in grammar speak. Subjective typically refers to being influenced by feelings or views. Depending on a person's individual perspective or choices, or the subject who is experiencing something, something is considered to be subjective.

In contrast, the term "objective" refers to something that is solely based on the examination of an observed item and is not influenced by or based on a personal viewpoint. Additionally, the passage's use of subjective terms like "worst" and "best" highlights how seriously people should take having health insurance. Thus, the use of additional subjective adjectives like "worst" and "best" would make the text more effective and objective.
