House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
We didn't always live on Mango Street. Before that we lived on Loomis on the third floor, and before that we lived on Keeler. Before Keeler it was Paulina, and before that I can't remember. But what I remember most is moving a lot. Each time it seemed there'd be one more of us. By the time we got to Mango Street we were six—Mama, Papa, Carlos, Kiki, my sister Nenny and me.
Chunk 1 annotation:

The house on Mango Street is ours, and we don't have to pay rent to anybody, or share the yard with the people downstairs, or be careful not to make too much noise, and there isn't a landlord banging on the ceiling with a broom. But even so, it's not the house we'd thought we'd get.
Chunk 2 annotation

We had to leave the flat on Loom is quick. The water pipes broke and the landlord wouldn't fix them because the house was too old. We had to leave fast. We were using the washroom next door and carrying water over in empty milk gallons. That's why Mama and Papa looked for a house, and that's why we moved into the house on Mango Street, far away, on the other side of town.
Chunk 3 annotation

They always told us that one day we would move into a house, a real house that would be ours forever so we wouldn't have to move each year. And our house would have running water and pipes that worked. And inside it would have real stairs, not hallway stairs, but stairs inside like the houses on TV. And we'd have a basement and at least three washrooms so when we took a bath we wouldn't have to tell everybody. Our house would be white with trees around it, a great big yard and grass growing without a fence. This was the house Papa talked about when he held a lottery ticket and this was the house Mama dreamed up in the stories she told us before we went to bed.
Chunk 4 annotation

But the house on Mango Street is not the way they told it at all. It's small and red with tight steps in front and windows so small you'd think they were holding their breath. Bricks are crumbling in places, and the front door is so swollen you have to push hard to get in. There is no front yard, only four little elms the city planted by the curb. Outback is a small garage for the car we don't own yet and a small yard that looks smaller between the two buildings on either side. There are stairs in our house, but they're ordinary hallway stairs, and the house has only one washroom. Everybody has to share a bedroom—Mama and Papa, Carlos and Kiki, me and Nenny.
Chunk 5 annotation

Once when we were living on Loomis, a nun from my school passed by and saw me playing out front.
The laundromat downstairs had been boarded up because it had been robbed two days before and the owner had painted on the wood YES WE'RE OPEN so as not to lose business.
Where do you live? she asked.
There, I said pointing up to the third floor.
You live there? There. I had to look to where she pointed—the third floor, the paint peeling, wooden bars Papa had nailed on the windows so we wouldn't fall out. You live there? The way she said it made me feel like nothing. There. I lived there. I nodded.

I knew then I had to have a house. A real house. One I could point to. But this isn't it. The house on Mango Street isn't it. For the time being, Mama says. Temporary, says Papa. But I know how those things go.

Narrator

An anonymous narrator tells the story and refers to the characters using third-person pronouns like “he” and “she.”

Point Of View

The novel has a childlike point of view. The narrator has access to the thoughts and feelings of the novel’s protagonist, Bruno, and his perspective dominates the tale. As a nine-year-old boy, Bruno frequently misunderstands the adult world around him. For instance, he doesn’t comprehend the nature or purpose of the concentration camp over which his father presides. He also mishears the camp’s name, misunderstanding “Auschwitz” as “Out-With.”

Tone

Fable-like yet foreboding. As a young child, Bruno understands little of what’s going on around him. Because of this, the novel has a fable-like tone in which Bruno sees everything as an adventure. Yet, as Bruno slowly learns more about the desolate realities of the camp, the tone of the novel grows increasingly foreboding.

Setting (Time)

1943

Setting (Place)

Berlin, Germany, and the Auschwitz concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland

Protagonist

Major Conflict

The novel’s major conflict arises when Bruno’s family is forced to move from their home in Berlin to a desolate place in Poland. Isolated, friendless, and far away from the familiar comforts of home, Bruno rails against the injustice of his situation. He also feels confused about the people in the striped pajamas he can see from his bedroom window, living on the other side of a tall fence.

The Time Machine

It was 21st June 2157 and Professor Jones was still busy with his experiments. Suddenly, his ten-year old son Tommy came into his lab and asked, "What's this? Looks like a time machine. Am I right Dad?" Mr Jones replied, "Yes, you are. My son is like me only. You guessed it right at one go." Tommy said, "Oh, that means I can go back to the Old Age. Wow! That is intriguing. I just can't wait for this journey." "Yes, you will. But not now. There are some parts which are left to be complete...Oh it's 1 pm now. Let's have our lunch." said Mr Jones and he and Tommy left the place.

An intruder came into the lab secretly. Watching the time machine, he said to himself, "Other than robbery, I have meagre knowledge about other fields. But still I bet anyone that this is a time machine. Oh, what if I go back in the 17th century? There were many monarchs at that time and they had many riches. Yeah, a good burglary. Let me execute the plan." He went inside the time machine and pressed a button, which took him back not into the 17th century, but to the Mesozoic Era. When he landed, he saw there was nothing but tall trees and fields. Then, suddenly, he saw a T-Rex coming towards him from among the trees. He cried and shouted, "Help! Help!" But you know, in the Mesozoic Era, not a single human lived, but the world was dominated by dinosaurs. So, there is no one to hear him. And the T-Rex gobbled him up! And that was the end of his robbery life.

What transition words often indicate a comparative organization?
like, similar, on the other hand
consequently, since
first, second, next, last
after that, therefore

Answers

Answer:

Transitional words and phrases show the relationships between the parts of a sentence, between the sentences in a paragraph, or between the paragraphs in a longer piece of writing (i.e., an essay, short story, novel, magazine article, etcetera). Although transitional words and phrases mean little by themselves, they are very important in linking your ideas together smoothly and logically so that your paragraphs have coherence. Transitional words and phrases can be divided into categories according to the kind of relationship you as a writer are trying to show. There are eight (8) basic categories you must learn:

To Show Time. after, afterward, always, as soon as, at last, at once, briefly, eventually, finally, immediately, in the meantime, in the past (or future), last, later, meanwhile, next, never, now, often, once, promptly, sometimes, soon.

To Show Place. above, among, around, at this point, behind, below, beside, beyond, down, forward, from, here, in front of, inside, nearby, next to, on, on the other side, opposite, over, through.

To Add An Idea. again, also, and, as well as, besides, for one thing, further, furthermore, in addition to, last, likewise, more, moreover, next, similarly, too.

To Illustrate or Explain an Idea. for example, for instance, in other words, in particular, namely, specifically, such as, that is, thus, to illustrate.

To Compare or Contrast Ideas. but, even so, conversely, differently, however, in contrast, in spite of, in the same way, nevertheless, on the contrary, on the other hand, still, yet.

To Show a Result. accordingly, as a result, consequently, for that reason, hence, then, therefore, thus.

To Empasize an Idea. above all, especially, indeed, in fact, most important.

To Summarize an Idea. as has been noted, finally, in brief, in other words, in short, on the whole, to sum up.

These are not all of the transitional words and phrases in the English language that we use, but they represent a good sampling of those most often employed in writing. Remember that transitions are like bridges -- they link one thing with another. They can be used to go forward (on to the next sentence or paragraph) or to go backward (to refer to something that has just been stated). The following is a brief listing of commonly used transitional words and phrases one finds in daily speech:

and before nevertheless accordingly

or otherwise unfortunately but

when however recently for

after therefore although for example

so consequently at last in conclusion

The student writer who masters the usage of transitional words and phrases is well on the way to achieving coherence (a smooth flow in the writing that is logical and easy to follow) in one's writing. Keep in mind that your paragraphs can be unified (stick to the topic sentence and the thesis statement) yet still lack coherence (sounding mechanical and stiff).

Coherence is achieved when the sentences in your paragraphs are arranged in an order that makes your ideas clear and sensible to the reader; the relationship among the sences and paragraphs is logical; and your ideas flow smoothly from one sentence and paragraph to the next. As one of the devices to achieve coherence, transitional words and phrases are a most important writing tool. With reference to using transitions effectively in writing (and also as a guide to reading with comprehension and critically), there are some authors (i.e., Langan, Donnelly, Neeld, et al) who refer to transitions as signal words. Do not let terminology fool you as the intent is the same -- no matter what you refer to these as, it is absolutely essential to master transitions if one is to become a good writer.

Explanation:

The like, similar, on the other hand transition words often indicate a comparative organization. Thus, option (a) is correct.

What is organization?

The word “organization” refers to the structure and hierarchy of the workplace, as well as the shared objectives of its participants. The word “organization” is primarily used in the workplace and in business policy. An organization are the based on the management without management are not the proper functioning of the organization.

The transition terms in the comparative organization were the like and the similar. To different people, comparative organizational study means different things. The persons and includes a number of research activities, some of which are focused on. Specific approaches are explored, as are more substantial issues.

As a result, like, similar, on the other hand transition words typically indicate a comparative organization. Therefore, option (a) is correct.

The theme reflected in the excerpt of "Anne Frank Remembered" is:

B. People who behave honorably have confidence in their convictions.

"Anne Frank Remembered" is the story of Miep Gies, the woman who helped Anne Frank and her family hide from the Nazi during the persecution of Jews.

In the excerpt we are analyzing here, the narrator is being yelled at by a man. He is clearly losing control of his temper more and more, while she remains silent.

Her behavior is honorable, respectful, dignified. That is a reflection of her confidence in her convictions.

The narrator has not changed what she believes to be right or wrong because of what the government wants. She values the lives of all humans.

That is why she can stand silent as the man screams. His violence will not affect her convictions.

With that in mind, we can select letter B as the correct option.
