After the fight, Atticus tells Scout that she needs to try and see things from other people's perspective, even when she doesn't understand them or agree with their actions. He explains that "you never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

This lesson is an important one for Scout, as it helps her to understand that everyone has their own experiences, perspectives, and motivations, and that it is important to try and see things from others' viewpoints in order to truly understand them. This lesson helps Scout to become more empathetic and understanding, and to recognize the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, even when she doesn't agree with them.

A Big Year
By Bob Kowalski

Would you go to the ends of the earth to see a bird? What if it were a really special bird: one with beautiful feathers, an entrancing call, or a silly dance? What if seeing that one special bird would allow you to win a contest?

If that contest doesn't get you on television or win you any cash prizes, would you still do it? For those who participate in the "Big Year," the honor of beating the previous record is the only reward they get or even want.

A "Big Year" is a year in which a person attempts to see as many different species of birds as possible within a particular region. For most in North America who participate in a "Big Year," this region is the lower 48 American states, plus Alaska, Canada, and a couple of French islands off the Canadian coast.

You may be thinking that looking at birds is silly, but just think about the numbers of the recent record holders and the commitment it takes to get these numbers. One recent "Big Year" winner managed to see 744 birds in one year, missing the record by just one bird. Big Year birders travel by train, plane, boat, car, bicycle, and of course, by foot. They can cover over 150 thousand miles to get numbers of sightings this high. They can also spend a small fortune.

Just to clarify, the birds these contestants are counting are the number that they see in a particular year. You see, the contest is based on an honor system. No pictures or other evidence is required as proof of a sighting. Most birders take great pride in their reputation and their abilities to see or hear and then identify a bird. Usually, important sightings of the rare birds needed to get counts in the 700s are visited by hundreds of birders. It is pretty hard to cheat your way to a record-breaking year, but in general, few are interested in cheating.

This honesty comes from the fact that most people who want to break such a record know the greatest rewards are not necessarily in winning. Such rewards are in being able to commit a year of your life to doing something you love. Rewards are found in seeing amazing, inspiring creatures like the California Condor or the Magnificent Frigate bird. Rewards also come in spending time with people who, like you, want to spend their time looking to the skies and trees for glimpses of emerald, crimson, or cerulean blue feathered jewels.

You don't have to be able to travel a continent to have a big birding experience though. Have a big month. Or a big weekend. Set a personal record, learn to identify the species that live in your part of the world, or try to learn the calls of just two species of birds. You will soon find looking at birds isn't such a strange way to spend your time.

Extra! Extra! Backyard Birding
Many schools, families, and young birders across the country participate in the "Great Backyard Bird Count." While not as long as a "Big Year," the "Great Backyard Bird Count" happens every year. It depends on birders and families across the country to watch feeders and other areas in their yards and count the number of birds they see. Unlike the "Big Year," the goal is not to see who can count the most birds. Instead, participants in this event work together to help bird experts get a good idea of how birds are doing. Participants are given checklists and enter their sightings on a website. Called a "citizen-science" project, this event is open to anyone, requires no travel, and happens every year over one weekend in February.

2. The Pardoner claims that because everything he does is motivated by his own greed, he is essentially an expert in greed and therefore good at teaching others. not to be greedy. Do you agree that the Pardoner is good at his job? Identify what his job is and whether you believe he is successful at it and explain why or why not.

Answers

Answer: It is difficult to say whether the Pardoner is good at his job because it is unclear what his job actually is. In the text, the Pardoner claims that his job is to teach others not to be greedy, but his actions throughout the story suggest that he is actually a con artist who uses his knowledge of people's greed to exploit them for his own financial gain.

For example, the Pardoner openly admits that he preaches against greed and avarice in order to trick people into buying indulgences, which he claims will absolve them of their sins but are actually useless pieces of paper. Furthermore, the Pardoner shows no remorse for his dishonest behavior, and even boasts about his ability to deceive people.

Given the Pardoner's dishonest and self-serving behavior, it is doubtful that he is successful at teaching others not to be greedy. In fact, his actions may actually encourage people to be more greedy, as they may see his success at exploiting others as proof that greed is a beneficial trait.

Overall, it is clear that the Pardoner is not a good teacher or moral guide, and it is doubtful that he is successful at his job, whatever that job may be.

The extract alludes to the concept that human beings will reply to their private senses whilst threatened.

Jack is converted into an animal. The hiss he utters is likened to the sound a snake makes whilst it's miles in danger. He becomes, for a short second, a "thing"—a creature rationale on self preservation. He has momentarily misplaced the rational wondering abilities a hunter could use whilst monitoring prey. John Updike's tragicomic short story "A&P" was published in 1961. The A&P in Updike's narrative is what M. Porter claims that the main character decides to rebel against the A&P and this consumer-conditioned culture when he does so, and that by doing so, he "has decided to live honestly and profoundly." What eventually causes John Proctor's downfall? Explain using evidence from the text.

Answers

In Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," John Proctor's downfall is ultimately caused by his refusal to comply with the demands of the Salem witch trials. Proctor is a farmer who is accused of practicing witchcraft and is subsequently brought before the court.

One of the main causes of Proctor's downfall is his stubbornness and refusal to confess to a crime he did not commit. Despite being offered leniency if he confesses and testifies against others, Proctor refuses to go along with the lies and manipulation of the court. He believes that confessing would mean admitting to a sin he did not commit, and he is not willing to compromise his integrity and reputation in this way.

Another factor in Proctor's downfall is his affair with Abigail Williams, which is used against him by the court as evidence of his guilt. Proctor's relationship with Abigail was seen as a betrayal of his wife, Elizabeth, and was used as a weapon against him in the court proceedings.

Finally, Proctor's downfall is also caused by the corrupt and manipulative nature of the Salem witch trials themselves. The court is willing to do whatever it takes to secure convictions, even if it means fabricating evidence and coercing false confessions. In this context, it becomes nearly impossible for Proctor to clear his name and avoid being found guilty.

Overall, John Proctor's downfall is the result of his refusal to go along with the lies and corruption of the Salem witch trials, as well as the consequences of his affair with Abigail Williams.

Kennedy used a variety of literary techniques, including antithesis, anaphora, and alliteration, in his inaugural speech to show his leadership.

In addition, Kennedy's inaugural address also uses parallelism and imagery to highlight unity among citizens and promote optimism for change in the United States of America.

Some examples of this alliteration are : "we shall pay any price, endure any burden..." or "let us go forth to lead the land we love". According to the sound being repeated, the alliteration not only helps the speaker and audience remember the speech but also helps set the mood.

Read the final paragraph of "How We Entered World War I."

In April 1917 the illusion of isolation was destroyed. America came to the end of innocence, and of the exuberant freedom of bachelor independence. That the responsibilities of world power have not made us happier is no surprise. To help ourselves manage them, we have replaced the illusion of isolation with a new illusion of omnipotence.
