How do the themes in the passage interact?

Answers

The themes of death and resurrection in the passage from Act V of Hamlet interact to create a larger theme of justice and revenge. In this way, Laertes' words add a new layer to the play, suggesting that justice and revenge will ultimately triumph over death and despair.

The passage from Act V of Hamlet contains two main themes: death and resurrection. These two themes are intertwined in the words of Laertes and the priest as they discuss what to do with the body of his sister, Ophelia.

Laertes' words suggest that despite her death, Ophelia's spirit will still be alive in the form of a "ministering angel," and that in death, new life can come from her body. This idea of resurrection is echoed by the priest's words that "violets may spring" from her "fair and unpolluted flesh."

The themes of death and resurrection symbolize the larger themes of the play, which include the theme of revenge. Laertes' words not only suggest the idea of a spiritual resurrection, but they also hint at his desire to avenge his sister's death. In this way, the themes of death and resurrection can be seen as a representation of Laertes' struggle to come to terms with his sister's death and his own desire for revenge.

The themes of death and resurrection are also tied to the idea of justice. Throughout the play, Hamlet is trying to avenge the death of his father and bring justice to his kingdom. In the passage, Laertes' words hint at a similar quest for justice. By suggesting that a "ministering angel" will come from his sister's death, Laertes implies that justice will be served and that his sister will be avenged.

Answers

These lines introduce the audience to the theme of love as overpowering and fickle. He calls sweet music the "food of love" and wants "an excess of it" so that he can satisfy his appetite for it.

What is the theme of Twelfth Night?

Twelfth Night, although being a comedy about a day of partying, deals with some serious subjects. Romantic love, family love, and even love of love are all discussed, as is the issue of image vs reality.

These are the words of Orsino, the lovesick Duke of Illyria. He introduces the audience to the notion of love as both overwhelming and fleeting. He refers to lovely music as "food of love" and desires "an excess of it" to fulfill his craving for it.

When the song has lost its sweetness, Orsino compares it to the water. It engulfs everything, like the water, and reduces its worth to a "cheap price." In one minute, love may transform from a lovely melody to an engulfing sea, he concludes.

He also claims that it changes form at random. The inconstancy of love echoes Orsino's own, portraying him as self-indulgent and theatrical.

Finally, because Orsino never mentions the object of his love in these first lines, the emotional outpouring suggests that Orsino is captivated with the concept of love rather than love for Olivia.

Who was Grendel?
