Samantha stood up from the computer and stared out the window at the group of boys and girls laughing and talking as they strolled past her house. They carried baseballs, bats, and gloves. Samantha had seen this group playing ball in the park, and she had longed to join them. Ever since her family had arrived in the United States from Mexico, she had been trying to figure out how to make friends.

“If I could play their game, I could join them,” she thought. To pass the time, Samantha decided to take a walk. Maybe if she passed the park, she would have the courage to speak to the ball players this time.

Before Samantha reached the park, she spotted Mr. Hernandez puttering in his garden. Her family had met him shortly after they had moved into their new home. When her parents learned that his wife had died recently, they began to invite him often for dinner. Samantha was eager to get to the park, but she knew that Mr. Hernandez was lonely. She called out a greeting.

“Samantha, it’s good you are here. I think I’ve been in the sun too long without a hat. I feel a little dizzy. Can you help me to the porch?”

Samantha guided him to the porch and brought a glass of water from the house. Mr. Hernandez seemed a little better in the shade but Samantha wanted to make sure, so she stayed awhile and chatted. Mr. Hernandez listened as Samantha poured out her longing to learn how to play baseball so that she could make friends.

By the time Samantha was sure Mr. Hernandez was all right, it was too late to walk past the park. She hurried home to help her mother prepare the evening meal. Then her mother sent her back to get Mr. Hernandez. He was sitting on the porch, with an excited look on his face.

“Imagine what I found in my closet!” he exclaimed.

Beside the chair were a worn baseball bat and glove and a few balls.

“You didn’t know I was a ballplayer in my day, did you?” he asked with a twinkle in his eye.

After supper that night, Samantha began her baseball lessons with Mr. Hernandez, and, within a week, she had become another one of the ballplayers in the park.

1 In the winter of 1976, when I was only four years old, my family moved into a modest home in a growing Greenville neighborhood. Upon a slope on one side of the house, stood a dozen tree sprigs looking rather bald and barren. By springtime, however, the little trees began growing taller and bushier by the day. Upon exploring the hillside in mid-July, I noticed hundreds of quarter-sized, pinkish orbs dangling, daring me to pick just one. Of course, I did.

2Plums? I questioned. Yes, plums. she reiterated. She explained that these were not the same as the deeply colored, voluptuous kind I had seen in the market. These were a smaller and much sourer variety.

3 Knowing that they were safe, I ate enough that one afternoon to give me a stomach ache that lasted two days. As the plums became riper and sweeter, my grandma and I picked enough to fill two enormous buckets. She taught me to make jelly from the tiny fruits which we could enjoy all winter long.

1 Crime is a continuing problem in our society, and to combat it, we must engage in a variety of tactics to give the courts and law enforcement the tools they need to keep us all safe. One valuable tool is a teen curfew, a simple law that restricts when youths under 18 years old can be outside of the home.

2 The benefit of curfews is twofold—they reduce the number of people on the streets who might cause trouble, and they keep youths safe. Even good kids might be tempted to get in minor trouble late at night. Small violations can take up large amounts of police time—time that is better spent dealing with more serious issues. A curfew just takes away the opportunity for kids to get in trouble by keeping them at home.

3 While some teens may be irritated by such restrictions, curfews actually keep youths safe. An old saying goes, “Nothing good happens after midnight.” For young people, this is particularly true. Serious crimes often happen at night, and curfews can keep kids from becoming victims.

4 Many cities set curfews for 11 p.m. during the week. There is simply no need for teens to be out of the house after that. At that hour, students should be done with part-time jobs, sports events, or other activities. Some cities allow teens to stay out until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. However, most believers in curfews would argue that an earlier deadline would be much more effective.

5 Of course, children can always be out with their parents or guardians. The purpose of the curfew is to make sure teens are under some sort of adult supervision. This can take place at home or away from home, as long as adults are present. Curfews have been proven to work. A 1997 United States Conference of Mayors survey of 347 cities found that curfews improved safety in 88 percent of the cities that enforced them.
