A vial is filled with room temperature water, and blue cold water has been placed at the bottom. A warm water bag sits next to the vial. What do you think will happen?

Answers

Explanation:

In the context, a vial which is used in store medical samples is filled with water at room temperature. And the vial is kept on a cold water. Also a water bag containing warm water is kept near the vial.

The cold water kept at the bottom of the vial is having lower kinetic energy while warm water will have higher kinetic energy than the others. Since the water in the vial is at room temperature and it is in touch with the cold blue water, the water in the vial will loose or give its temperature to the cold blue water through conduction as well as convection process since temperature always flows from a hot body towards the cold body.

On the other hand, the warm water placed next tot he vial will give its temperature to the atmosphere.

What is the net charge of a nitrogen atom with 8 electrons

Answers

Answer:

– 1

Explanation:

From the question given above, we obtained the following:

Electron = 8

Net charge of nitrogen =.?

Nitrogen has atomic number of 7. This also means that nitrogen has 7 proton because atomic number of an element is the equal to number of protons in the atom of the element.

Thus, we can obtain the net charge of nitrogen with 8 electrons by calculating the difference between the protons and electrons of the nitrogen atom. This can be obtained as follow:

Proton = 7

Electron = 8

Net charge = Proton – Electron

Net charge = 7 – 8

Net charge = – 1

Therefore, the net charge of the nitrogen atom with 8 electrons is – 1

Carbon-rich exoplanets may be made of diamonds

Date: September 11, 2020

Source: Arizona State University

Summary: Astronomers have determined that some carbon-rich exoplanets, given the right circumstances, could be made of diamonds and silica.

Explanation:

As missions like NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, TESS and Kepler continue to provide insights into the properties of exoplanets (planets around other stars), scientists are increasingly able to piece together what these planets look like, what they are made of, and if they could be habitable or even inhabited.

In a new study published recently in The Planetary Science Journal, a team of researchers from Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Chicago have determined that some carbon-rich exoplanets, given the right circumstances, could be made of diamonds and silica.

"These exoplanets are unlike anything in our solar system," says lead author Harrison Allen-Sutter of ASU's School of Earth and Space Exploration.

Diamond exoplanet formation

When stars and planets are formed, they do so from the same cloud of gas, so their bulk compositions are similar. A star with a lower carbon to oxygen ratio will have planets like Earth, comprised of silicates and oxides with a very small diamond content (Earth's diamond content is about 0.001%).

But exoplanets around stars with a higher carbon to oxygen ratio than our sun are more likely to be carbon-rich. Allen-Sutter and co-authors Emily Garhart, Kurt Leinenweber and Dan Shim of ASU, with Vitali Prakapenka and Eran Greenberg of the University of Chicago, hypothesized that these carbon-rich exoplanets could convert to diamond and silicate, if water (which is abundant in the universe) were present, creating a diamond-rich composition.

Diamond-anvils and X-rays

To test this hypothesis, the research team needed to mimic the interior of carbide exoplanets using high heat and high pressure. To do so, they used high pressure diamond-anvil cells at co-author Shim's Lab for Earth and Planetary Materials.

First, they immersed silicon carbide in water and compressed the sample between diamonds to a very high pressure. Then, to monitor the reaction between silicon carbide and water, they conducted laser heating at the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, taking X-ray measurements while the laser heated the sample at high pressures.

As they predicted, with high heat and pressure, the silicon carbide reacted with water and turned into diamonds and silica.

Habitability and inhabitability

So far, we have not found life on other planets, but the search continues. Planetary scientists and astrobiologists are using sophisticated instruments in space and on Earth to find planets with the right properties and the right location around their stars where life could exist.

For carbon-rich planets that are the focus of this study, however, they likely do not have the properties needed for life.

While Earth is geologically active (an indicator habitability), the results of this study show that carbon-rich planets are too hard to be geologically active and this lack of geologic activity may make atmospheric composition uninhabitable. Atmospheres are critical for life as it provides us with air to breathe, protection from the harsh environment of space, and even pressure to allow for liquid water.

"Regardless of habitability, this is one additional step in helping us understand and characterize our ever- increasing and improving observations of exoplanets," says Allen-Sutter. "The more we learn, the better we'll be able to interpret new data from upcoming future missions like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope to understand the worlds beyond on our own solar system."

Which statement explains how the bands in the crystal of a metal are like atomic orbitals?
A. They both have localized electrons that orbit specific atoms.
B. They both involve ionization of some atoms so bonding can occur.
C. They both have delocalized electrons that move from atom to atom.
D. They both allow electrons to move from lower energy levels to higher energy levels.

Answers

Answer:

D

Explanation:

Correct On EDU

Crystal lattice of metals are highly ordered in which the ions and electrons are arranged in a stoichiometric proportion. But,electrons can excite to higher energy levels as they fo in atomic state. Thus , option D is correct.

What is crystal lattice?

Crystal are highly ordered structures of solids and is anisotropic in nature with a perfect geometry and crystal lattice units. There will be free electrons present in the interstices spaces and which can be delocalized throughout the lattice results in conduction.

Electrons can acquire energy to excite to the higher energy levels from the lower energy level in a crystal lattice. Electrons are revolving around the nucleus of an atom through definite circular paths of fixed energy.

Electrons in an atom tends to excite to higher energy levels and then will return to the lower energy level by emission of energy in the form of light or heat. This process make the element coloured and conducting as in the case of crystal bands in metals.

Hence, both atoms and metal lattice allow electrons to move from lower energy levels to higher energy levels and option D is correct.

Sulfur will accept electrons.
Sulfur will donate electrons.
Sulfur will become a positive ion.
Sulfur will become less stable.

Answers

Answer:

The answer is Sulfur will accept electrons

Explanation:

Because it will most likely occur if sulfur forms an ionic bond with the elements

If sulfur forms an ionic bond with another element then the sulfur will accept electrons. Hence option A is correct.

What is ionic bond?

Due to their electrostatic attraction, oppositely charged species interact via ionic bonding, a form of chemical connection.

One atom transfers electrons to another when a positively charged ion forms a connection with a negatively charged ion.

Example: NA+ and Cl- gives NaCl

Sulfur belongs to group 6A of non-metals. Its valence electrons number six. It follows the octet rule. It must acquire two electrons. Thus, it creates two single covalent connections (ionic bonds).

When sulfur receives two electrons, it is ionized itself, so it from an ion with a 2-charge.

Sulfur will accept electrons will mostly likely occur if sulfur forms an ionic bond with another element. Hence option A is correct.
