The Bell Rock Lighthouse, off the east shoreline of Scotland close to Arbroath, is the world's most established, working ocean washed beacon. An ocean washed beacon is worked out adrift, frequently on a stone or reef.

The beacon was monitored until 1988 when the last head manager, John Boath, resigned. For most of that time there was a commendation of four attendants three men serving on the stone, while the fourth withdrew at the shore station the Signal Tower at Arbroath as this shows the whole idea of the The Bell Rock.

Emilio took the cap off his head, dropped the baseball bat, and rested his elbows on the fence. It wasn't that he couldn't find the ball. It was sitting right in the middle of the lawn, just beyond the fence. The fence was not very high either. Emilio could probably get a running start, grab the top of the fence, and flip right over it. But there was a dog, a large Rottweiler with a spiked collar. He sat under an awning a few feet away from the ball. He looked at Emilio and let out a menacing growl. Archie, Scotty, and Dutch ran up to Emilio and surveyed the situation. Archie was the first to speak, "So, are you going to do it, Emilio?" 1. What were the boys doing right before the text begins? 2. What problem is Emilio facing? 3. Why is this problem Emilio's instead of Archie's, Scotty's, or Dutch's?

Answers

Answer:

1. The boys were playing baseball.  2. The problem that Emilio is facing is that a rottweiler is guarding the baseball that went over the fence.  3. It is Emilio's problem because he hit it over the fence probably.

Explanation:

1. Baseball was being played by the boys. 2. Emilio is having trouble because a rottweiler is watching over the baseball that slipped under the fence. 3. Emilio is responsible for the issue because it was likely hit over the fence.

What is Baseball?

In the bat-and-ball game of baseball, two teams of nine players each alternate between batting and fielding. When the umpire indicates to the pitcher that the ball is now in play, either verbally or physically, the game is in progress.

The goal of the game is to score runs by moving a player from first base to home base while moving around the bases. The team of the player receives one run for each full circuit of the bases that they make. Baseball only allows just one score, unless one team is unable or unwilling to finish the game, in which case the game is forfeited.

Because practically anyone, regardless of age, may participate, baseball is frequently referred to as the Great American Game or Great American Pastime. The most well-known sport for young boys and girls to play in official, structured leagues with a national framework is likely Little League baseball.

EXIT TICKET for "Two kinds" — Short Response

In "Two kinds," how do June's feelings about her mother change from

the beginning to the end of the story? How do the interactions

between June and her mother illustrate this change?

Use evidence from the text to support your response. Be sure to

explain how each piece of evidence supports your analysis.

Answers

Answer:

June's feelings about her mother change from the beginning to the end of the story because when she is young, she doesn't understand why her mother makes her "try" to discover her talent (she ends up taking piano lessons) and she denies to take her piano lessons seriously since she thinks that's not her life and her mother is forcing her to take them. At the end of the story, June explains that after her mother died she went back to her house and looked at the piano that was still there. When she starts playing, she realizes that the two different songs that she used to play when she was young were actually the same song (right hand and left hand). Her mother always told her that she wasn't "talented" at playing the piano just because she wasn't trying enough, she didn't put effort, she didn't pay attention. I believe at this moment June realizes her mother was right, although it's true that her mother was extremely severe.

Every time June and her mother interacted in the short story, it was a conversation where June's mother told her that she needed to be "talented" and June told her that she didn't want to. For example, in this case her mother is telling her that it's time for her piano lessons after the TV talented show where June didn't play so well:

"Four clock," she reminded me, as if it were any other day. I was stunned, as though she were asking me to  go through the talent-show torture again. I planted myself more squarely in front of the TV.

"Turn off TV," she called from the kitchen five minutes later. I didn't budge. And then I decided, I didn't  have to do what mother said anymore.

After that situation, June told her mother a very hurtful phrase about how she wished she was dead like the other kids her mother hadn't had. This phrase changed the relationship between them. Then, the years that followed are described and we can read about a conversation between them when June is thirty:

A few years ago she offered to give me the piano, for my thirtieth birthday. I had not  played in all those years. I saw the offer as a sign of forgiveness, a tremendous burden removed. "Are you  sure?" I asked shyly. "I mean, won't you and Dad miss it?" "No, this your piano," she said firmly. "Always  your piano. You only one can play."

"Well, I probably can't play anymore," I said. "It's been years." "You pick up fast," my mother said, as if  she knew this was certain. “You have natural talent. You could be a genius if you want to." "No, I couldn't." "You just not trying," my mother said. And she was neither angry nor sad. She said it as if  announcing a fact that could never be disproved. "Take it," she said.

Her mother's posture is still the same but their feelings have change. The next thing that happens is what has already been described, June finds herself playing the piano after her mother dies.

Explanation:

To complete this exercise, you have to read the short story "Two kinds" written by Amy Tan and then answer the questions using examples from the story.

"Two kinds" is a short story about the relationship between June and her mother. June's mother comes from China and she thinks everyone can be talented and famous in the US and June doesn't feel the same as her mother because she has been born and rise in the US.

Pls, help write a paragraph of how the events that affected the discovery of the Rosetta stone.

Answers

Answer:

The Rosetta Stone, a 1700-pound piece of rock (called a stele) discovered in the sands of Egypt, was the key to modern understanding of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The Stone, discovered in 1799 by a soldier in the French army headed by Napoleon Bonaparte, contains essentially the same text in three different languages: Ancient Greek, Demotic, and hieroglyphs. A full translation of the Greek versions was completed in 1803, but it was 20 years before linguists worked out the details of the hieroglyphs.

Bonaparte became leader of the French army and people in the late 18th Century. Because of the French Revolution and other European governments' opposition to it, France was at war with most of the other European powers for two decades. Because Bonaparte was the central figure in this series of conflicts, they are often called the Napoleonic Wars.

The French presence in Egypt intensified as the 18th Century was ending. French troops claimed ownership of large parts of Egypt. While building forts in the area, French troops found the Stone, near the Nile-delta town of Rashid, also called Rosetta. The Stone, 45 inches high, 28.5 inches wide, and 11 inches thick, was one of many artifacts unearthed by French forces.

In 1801, British troops defeated the French forces in Egypt. Part of the settlement after this battle was that Britain gained control of the Stone and of other artifacts. Beginning the following year, the British Museum had the Rosetta Stone on display. But at that time, neither the British nor the French really knew what they had found.

The use and understanding of hieroglyphs had gone out of fashion in the early centuries A.D. A few Arab historians made an attempt in the 9th and 10th Centuries but without success. A few more European historians tried again in the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries, still without success. The discovery of the Rosetta Stone renewed an interest in understanding hieroglyphs, and historians and linguists tried again.

Scholars still understood Ancient Greek but struggled initially with the administrative technicalities of the language on the Stone. A British translation of the Ancient Greek text was available in early 1802. The following year, French linguists, working on a copy of the text made after the initial discovery, produced a copy in both French and Latin.

Meanwhile, a French linguist had recognized some of the letters on the other non-hieroglyph set of writing as belonging to what came to be called Demotic script. Characters written in this script had been found in Egypt and were similar to the Coptic language, which had begun in the area in more recent times. A French scholar, Antoine-Isaac Silvestre de Sacy, reported identifying in the Demotic script the names of five people, including Alexander the Great and Ptolemy I.

Silvestre de Sacy did not work on the translation further except to remark to one of his colleagues that names in hieroglyphs might be written phonetically. This supposition was based on work done by previous French scholars. A British researcher took the French suggestion to heart and succeeded in identifying several similarities between the Ancient Greek text and the Demotic script. Until that time, researchers in all countries had believed that the texts were independent of one another.

Another French scholar was the one who ultimately cracked the code. Jean-Francois Champollion had, in 1814, identified the phonetic characters spelling the name of Cleopatra in two inscriptions on a famous obelisk. One inscription was Greek, and the other was in hieroglyphs. Champollion turned his attention to the Rosetta Stone and eventually found similarities for the pharaonic names Ramses and Thutmose. In 1822, he announced a full translation of the hieroglyphs. The Frenchman eventually constructed a hieroglyphic dictionary and a grammar of Ancient Egyptian writings.

Many historians now think that the Rosetta Stone text was written in three languages so that most Egyptians could understand it. Ancient Greek was the language of the pharaohs at the time the Stone was carved, 196 B.C. Demotic was the common script of Egypt at the time. And, of course, hieroglyphs were the language of the priests.

The text itself is a list of all the things the current pharaoh, Ptolemy V, had done so far in his reign. The Rosetta Stone is part of a larger stele that fragmented in the centuries it was buried.

Thanks to the efforts of Champollion and other scholars, everyone can now understand ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.
