Tris's mother locates her in the Erudite compound in Chapter 35 of Divergent and saves her from drowning in a glass tank. Tris apologises for abandoning Abnegation as she and Tris leave the complex.
In response, her mother dismisses the divisions. Tris' suspicion that her mother is brave and selfless is confirmed by the incident. She was raised in Dauntless, and after living for decades as an Abnegation, she manages to sneak into the compound, kill a number of guards, and save her daughter from probable death. She even has the guts to call the entire social structure into question. She gives Tris a role model for independent thinking and action by stating her opinion that the government is incorrect.
