A continental divide is a naturally occurring border or ridge that separates the river systems of a continent. Each river system drains into its own ocean basin, bay, or sea.

Continental divides are large, continent-wide drainage splits, sometimes known as divides. Divides are the boundaries that separate various-sized drainage basins or watersheds. Drainage divisions occur in raised terrain such as mountain ranges or hills, regardless of scale.

Precipitation falling on one side of the split will generally flow to one basin, while precipitation falling on the other side will flow to another.

Sometimes, water may flow toward an endorheic basin, such as a saline lake or salt flat. Endorheic basins are found in desert locations and do not link to an ocean or other big body of water. Most of Africa's Sahara Desert, for example, is an endorheic basin. This implies that rivers and streams flowing into Lake Chad, on the southwestern edge of the Sahara, have no access to the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, or Indian Ocean.

Every continent has a continental divide. Continents with more than two bodies of water may have several continental divides. North America, for example, has three to five major divisions. Because the exact border between ocean basins is not commonly understood, scientists have yet to settle on a definite number.

Some continental boundaries extend over many continents. The Continental Divide of the Americas, sometimes known as the Great Divide, extends through much of North and South America. It separates the water flowing toward the Pacific Ocean from the water flowing toward the Atlantic, Arctic, and Gulf of Mexico. This divide stretches from Cape Prince of Wales in western Alaska through the Rocky Mountains of western Canada and the continental United States, then through Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental highlands, Central America, and South America's Andes Mountains.
