Babcock was the first to suggest the concept of adaptive optics in 1953 and created a number of astronomy devices. He was an expert in spectroscopy and the investigation of stellar magnetic fields. He put up a theory for the magnetism of sunspots called the Babcock Model.
One of the original proofs of dark matter was in Babcock's doctoral thesis. He provided data on studies of Andromeda's rotation curve that revealed the mass-to-luminosity ratio rises radially.
