When Barclay in the Detroit opened with long guns, the action began. Perry assaulted the Detroit in the Lawrence while being assisted by two schooners. Shortly after, he attacked the Queen Charlotte. The British ships were severely damaged by the strong and lengthy gunnery of the American brigs.
By winning the Battle of Lake Erie on September 10, 1813, the United States secured sovereignty over Lake Erie and prevented Great Britain from gaining any territory in the Northwest during the peace negotiations.
