Farming was difficult in the great plains because it is high -grass praire is in dark green, mid grass praire is in midgreen , and low grass praire in pale green.
The pale green portion typically gets only about 10-20 inches of rain annually & it is subject to draughts tht can last for several years it should never be farmed unless an adequate source of irrigation water is locally available. Cattle ranching is suitable use of most of that low grass praire.
The dark green portion get atleast 40 inches of rain annually , it was incredible difficult to farm when settlers first arrived in that high grass praire because no plows existed that could break its damp.
The middling green portion gets 20 to 40 inches of rain annually was never difficult to farm because by the time settlers reached that mid grass praire.
