Scrooge is a grumpy and greedy old man whose business partner, Jacob Marley, died seven years before. On Christmas eve, he saw the ghostly images of Jacob on the doorknocker of his front door, and that of a locomotive hearse climbing his house´s stairs.  

The fact that he double-locked himself in when that´s not his custom and him feeling "a terrible sensation" shows that he´s frightened by the experience.
