The Puritans believed that God had formed a unique understanding or agreement with them. They believed that God expected them to live according to the Scriptures. They were of the view that God expected from them to set a good example that would cause those who had remained in England to change their sinful ways. Most early migrants to the Massachusetts Bay Colony were full-grown members of the Puritan faith.

Although Revolutionary thinkers' ideas and values were entirely different, the way they had represented their ideas and values was common. Because they wanted to get the true meaning of life, their purpose was to live according to the rules of God. Moreover, they want their religion to be the core part of everything. However, the enlightenment period drove them apart as they started considering the knowledge and experience as a crucial part of their lives. They bend to more scientific knowledge rather than religious talks.
